Audio description

A hand presses a remote control button, on the left side a menu pointing at the audio description option

The big screen has always made us experience incredible stories, feel emotions that we thought we had forgotten and travel to hidden, magical places. Audio description or video description is a support system for blind people that allows them to access autonomously the content of pre-recorded audiovisual material such as films or television shows, as well as theater pieces, paintings, sculptures or interesting places.

Process:

1. Content Visualization:

The screenwriter or audio describer watches the film, specifies its audio structure and determines what natural pauses and spaces are suitable for adding details. He also investigates in depth the film or production's topic, space, time, actors, conflicts, parallel stories and term accuracy.

2. Script Production:

Main characters are described along with their characteristic physical features, as well as actions which are not deduced from dialogue or sound elements. Production elements such as location, objects and costumes are also described.

The key of audio description is respect for blind people and their criteria to infer emotional states, history development and conclusions. The audio describer does not discover or advances the plot and avoids conveying subjective viewpoints.

3. Script Revision:

A group of professionals that watches the movie reviews the script and makes corrections or gives additional input.

4. Locution:

The narrator is selected from our group of professional voice actors. The film's genre and voices are also taken into account. As the narrator records the audio description, he watches the film in order to follow the rhythm and the intention of each scene, so when a blind person listens to the narration he perceives the message as a harmonic whole.

5. Assembling and Post-Production:

The film's original audio is mixed with the audio description, equalizing volume, music and environmental effects.

6. Final Review:

According to the means to be used to deliver the audio description to the blind person, formats, timing and other key factors of the final product are reviewed.

This has been done based on ATmedios' experience with the American model and taking the Spanish norm as reference, but we have add our objectivity, language and Colombian accent to our audio description. We have an experienced group of screenwriters and a quality control team made up of blind people with experience in the production of audiovisual material.

Also, we provide scripts and voices for audio guides of museums, parks, historic centers, galleries and more.
