The Ministry of Information Technology and Communications starts a new cycle of "Movies for Everyone". The project, which is aimed at people with visual or hearing disabilities and their families, brings some news for 2015: films will be screened in new cities and the WhatsCine app will be available in more theaters.
The project offers the audio description service for people who are blind or have low vision, as well as subtitles and sign language interpretation for deaf people. More than 18,000 people have benefited from this initiative. ATmedios, the Colombian company in charge of developing these support systems, follows international accessibility standards in order to contribute to opening new spaces for inclusion.
"Movies for Everyone" started in 2013 in an alliance with Cine Colombia and Fundacion Saldarriaga Concha. Its objective is to reach 60 percent of the 2.9 million people with disabilities in the country, so they can enjoy these entertainment spaces with their families.
Barranquilla, Ibague and one of the cities in the coffee-growing region are included in this cycle, which will begin on February 28 with the Colombian film "Se nos armo la gorda".
Movie screenings can be enjoyed at Cine Colombia theaters by people with hearing and visual disabilities and their companions at 9:30 a.m. the last Saturday of each month. The following theaters are available:
- Bogota: Gran Estacion and Centro Mayor Malls
- Medellin: Molinos Mall
- Cali: Cosmocentro
- Bucaramanga: Cacique Mall
- Monteria: Alamedas del Sinu Mall
- Barranquilla: Buenavista Mall
- Ibague: La Estacion Mall
Screenings in the coffee-growing region will alternate each Saturday, beginning in Pereira (Victoria Mall), the following Saturday in Manizales (Fundadores Mall) and then in Armenia (Portal Quindio Mall).
The WhatsCine app, which is available for download from any smartphone or tablet, allows people with visual disabilities to listen to the film with audio description and also the deaf population can use the Colombian sign language interpretation option. The application is available in Bogota (Gran Estacion), Medellín, Cali, Barranquilla and Bucaramanga.
